Dr. Milan Vuitch v. United States Government--1971
This was the first case strictly about abortion to reach the Supreme Court.Vuitch, a licensed physician, was charged with performing abortions in Washington, D.C.This violated a law that only allowed abortions to preserve a woman's life or health.
The Supreme Court ruled that "health" should include psychological as well as physical well-being. The Court also decided that the burden of proof should be on the prosecutor who brought the charges. The accused should not be held responsible for proving the charges wrong.
